#5 The Old Man and the Sea

You are never told what year this story is taking place in. But, based on the story I assume that it happened in the past. It seems to me that there are not be as many fishermen working now as there were in the story. Now there are so many other jobs that people can do because we have different technology and things that can be done. Also, in the story they talk about how the old man doesn't keep a radio in his boat and does it the old, original way. But, we do live in a different environment than the man in the story does. He lives in Cuba right by the sea so it makes sense to me that there would be a lot of fishermen and they can supply fish to people in other parts of the world. The old man proved a theme of working hard for what you want or need. Which, I assume many people had to do in that time. Now most people just have to sit behind a desk or work on a computer. Many fishermen now would just want quantity over quality just to make some money. The old man thinks opposite of what people do now days. He had pride in what he did and wanted to have the best fish out of all the other fishermen. The old man really loved what he did and cherished every fish he caught. He thought it was a blessing whenever he caught fish. Now people have huge nets and catch hundreds of fish at a time and do not have to do all the hard work that the old man did. They don't appreciate a single fish but instead appreciate a bunch of fish and don't think of them as individuals. Time has really changed since the story has taken place.
