#7 The Old Man and the Sea

I believe Hemingway uses many different techniques to engage the readers. One technique he used throughout the story is suspense. Almost all of the story is about the old man catching one fish. It goes through the whole process of catching the fish and every little detail of what the man has to do. Every time the man gains on the fish it makes you really want him to be able to catch it. This happens many times in the story and it really draws you in and wonder when the man will finally catch the fish or if he will even ever catch it. There is also symbolism in this story. I think that the marlin is going through the same exact thing the man is. The marlin symbolizes hard work, determination, and passion. The fish never gave up and kept traveling without rest. The man was very passionate about catching the fish and loved his job. He wasn't going to give up either and went through the same pain the marlin did and had the same passion the marlin did. The fish did not want to die and kept going no matter how hard it got. Basically, Hemingway is saying have passion in your work and don't give up on what you really want. Hemingway also makes you concerned about the old man. You worry about his health and how far out at sea he is and whether or not he would be able to find his way back. I began to worry that the man was losing his mind and going insane because he was talking to himself and kept thinking to himself that he just might be going crazy. I felt bad for the old man and worried about him. I'm sure the young boy was also worrying about the same things that I was. The author really mad you concerned about the old man. That was another technique that drew me into the story. I think Hemingway did an excellent way of pulling in the reader and making them want to finish the story quickly.
