The conflicts start right at the beginning of this story. Holden never tried in school and only passed his English class. Because, he never tried he got kicked out of his school. It was said to be a very nice boarding school where boys could get a great education. After he gets kicked out of school Holden knows he will lose his parents respect and they would be really mad at him. This wasn't the first school Holden has gotten kicked out of and his parents are tired of it. Since Holden keeps getting kicked out of school and not getting a good education, there is no way he is going to have a good future. But, Holden does not seemed to be worried that he is ruining his future. As he keeps going on his journey through New York City alone Holden keeps losing happiness and becomes more and more depressed. He feels lonely all the time and even thinks about committing suicide a couple times in the story. Holden was thinking of jumping out the window but he didn't want people to see his body when he landed on the ground so he decided not to. Then he went on a date with his old girlfriend Sally. He got really frustrated with her and went off on her. "C'mon, let's get outa here," I said. "You give me a royal pain in the ass, if you want to know the truth." (Salinger 173) After that happened he lost his friendship with Sally. The main character never really gains anything good in this story. He gains happiness watching Phoebe on the carousal but that really is about it. He only losses a lot of things in this story and he is just really sad and worried throughout the whole story. It is really a depressing book but I thought it was still really good. It is his own fault he got kicked out of school and got into the tough situation of being alone in the city, though. He could have tried harder.
