The Catcher in the Rye - Holden Caulfield

The main character of this book is Holden Caulfield. I could really relate to him. He gets annoyed by a lot of people and wants to be left alone but then once he is left alone he always feels lonely. This I can understand because I also get annoyed easily even though I don't want to. But, people describe him as being "yellow." "Some guys spend days looking for something they lost. I never seem to have anything that if I lost it I'd care too much. Maybe that's why I'm partly yellow." (Salinger 117) I think being yellow means not really caring too much and just going with the flow of things. That was Holden is like. I also think being yellow means not doing exactly what he wants to do. For instance he could have something in his mind that he really wants to say but he will just hold it in instead of being brave. I think it probably bothers him sometimes and I bet he wishes he could be tougher and stand up for himself more. I really could relate to this character too because I want to be a psychologist when I grow up. He obviously has some sort of mental problem. "Boy, I felt miserable. I felt so depressed, you can't imagine." (Salinger 129) I find it fascinating that people can feel like that for no reason at all. But, I guess he did have a reason to be depressed. He was alone throughout a lot of this story and kept getting kicked out of schools. He didn't have a good looking future ahead of him but he didn't seem to care too much. I think that was because of his "yellowness." Maybe he thought everything would fall into place by themselves. But, I would be worried if I was him. He is worried about a lot of things in the story but he was never really worried about what he was going to do or be when he gets older.
