Throughout the book there are a lot of different problems which effect the families in good ways and in bad ways. When Tom Joad first got out of jail he went to his childhood home and saw that his family was not there. He met up with Casy and Muley and found out that his family was at his Uncle John's house. He traveled all that way and he gained his family back. Of course, the main conflict in the story was the family traveling to California. They were trying to get money and live in a beautiful place where there would be no stress. Along the way they had to overcome sickness and death. The trip made them loss their grandma, grandpa, and dog. The family hoped the trip would be worth it and that California would be amazing and change their lives. On their journey they met friends and they met more nice people when they got into California. They made friends in the government camp that they stayed in and they ended up traveling with the Wilsons. They became good friends with the Wilsons and they helped each other out. So they gained help and friendship. Once they got to California it was a lot different than they planned. They could not find jobs and began to lose money. The mother had a problem trying to feed the whole family and they struggled living. "In the West there was a panic when the migrants multiplied on the highways. Men of property were terrified for their property. Men who had never been hungry saw the eyes of the hungry. Men who had never wanted anything very much saw the flare of want in the eye of the migrants." (Steinbeck 282-283) This quote was talking about all the people who were traveling to California. They lost their homes, money, food, and hope. I think the people in this story lost more than they gained.
