I'm not sure what other people think but I believe Casy is the true hero in this story. He isn't in the whole story and ends up dying but he really is brave. He used to be a pastor but gave up because he doesn't know what to believe and thinks he has to much sin to be a pastor. He was brave and left with the Joads. He didn't know what to expect but he wanted to spread his ideas to people on the road. People just look at him as an old pastor and people think he is a holy man. But, once people get to know Casy better they think he is kind of crazy or "touched." He gets ideas and believes in things other people think is crazy. But, he doesn't change his opinion. Casy always did what he could to help people. He prayed for people when they were dying and he prayed when the Joads had to bury their grandpa. Tom got in trouble in the story for tripping a police officer. Casy knew Tom would get in trouble and go to jail and it would devastate the family to lose him again so Casy took the blame for Tom and went to jail for him. He had no idea what he was going into and he did not know how long he would be in jail for. He just knew he was helping the Joads so he did it. Later on Tom ran into Casy again. Casy was leading a strike trying to give the migrants proper wages and get jobs. Casy believed they should be treated fairly and should be paid more than 25 cents an hour. He fought for what he believed in and wasn't afraid. He ran into a police officer and the officer knew Casy was the leader. His last words before he got killed were even kind words. This is what Casy said to the officers before he died: Casey stared blindly at the light. He breathed heavily. "Listen," he said. "You fellas don' know what you're doin'. You're helpin' to starve kids." (Steinbeck 386) He died trying to prove his point. He never gave up on what was right.
