Like I said earlier in another post, the theme of the book in my opinion is determination. It is shown throughout the whole story. The Joads would never back down from their problems and they would push through them no matter what gets in their way. They continue their whole journey to California even though there were a lot of problems along the way. They had to work through death, car troubles, and had to leave people behind. There is also a major symbol in this story. The title says what the symbol is. "; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." ( Steinbeck 349) Notice the title, The Grapes of Wrath was mentioned in that quote. I believe this quote explains the whole story. The people keep striving, keep going to get work, get food. The people crave it and need it. The hope and desire of the people keep growing and growing they need help and need food and money. Their desire keeps growing until the end, until all is well. The people fight with one another and do whatever they can to get money and food. They would rather get paid less than have no work at all. They are so dedicated to getting a happy life they want it more than everything in their lives. They all were so scared and you could see the fear in their eyes. There was so much pressure to get money and food. Parents could not let their children starve. The people tried over and over again to get work. That's where to theme, determination, comes into the story. All these people wanted was a happy life. They never knew they would have to work that hard for it. I wish it would not have been so hard for these people. I know people in real life had to go through all of this struggle. I couldn't imagine being in that situation.
