The Grapes of Wrath had three main parts: when the Joads are at home, when they are on the road and when they are in California. I believe each of the three symbolize something. When the Joads are at home nobody else is around because they were forced to move. The land was covered in dust and nothing would grow there. I think their home symbolizes despair. Everyone there had lost hope and moved away. It was impossible to prosper there and almost nobody still lived there. People gave up on the land. Everyone packed up their necessities and moved on to California. It is a long 2000 mile journey but apparently it was worth it. So thousands of people started on there way. I think the road stood for determination. The Joads got into a lot of trouble on the way to California. They had deaths in the family and had car troubles. Not everyone got along all the time either. But, the Joads had their minds set to make it to California. So that is what they did, they kept traveling. They had their eye on the prize; California. California symbolized hope. People believed they would have a good life in California. Flyer went around talking about nice jobs where people would get to pick fruit all day. The land was beautiful and the soil was very fertile. People could get a job and save up money to get a nice house with the beautiful land around them. But, little did the people know, California was just as bad as where they were coming from. There were no jobs for the people and they got treated awful by the police. People were starving and dying. So then in the end California symbolized despair just like their original home did. We never got to find out if they ever found what they were looking for or if they ever finally had a happy life.
